The Western Australian electricity industry has high prices, no real competition and no choice.

Western Australia also has the least competitive market structure. This has been evidenced by:

  • No market for the sale of uncontracted electricity;
  • No significant entry of new generators or retailers;
  • No independent oversight of how other players can access Western Power’s networks;
  • No incentive for Western Power to buy electricity from other producers; and
  • An inhibition on the entry of renewable energy projects.

The bottom line is that there is limited competition and choice for consumers and inadequate competitive pressure on prices.
