Western Australians pay amongst the highest electricity prices in
The basic problem is that our electricity industry is centred around one dominant player, Western Power.
This means that one huge monopoly essentially controls how electricity is generated, distributed and sold. It means that consumers, both residential and business, don’t have a real choice in who they buy their electricity from.
Because Western Power is effectively the electricity industry in this State, major changes to the structure of Western Power is essential to promote a competitive market. And true competition is the only way we can encourage investment, economic growth, lower prices and job creation.
In November 2002, the State Government endorsed a plan to overhaul the State’s electricity market. The plan is is a cautious, sensible program which draws on lessons from interstate and overseas but which is tailored to respond to local conditions.
Since that time significant progress has been made by the Electricity Reform Implementation Steering Committee and Electricity Reform Implementation Unit in delivering the Government’s reform agenda.
We are currently entering the final phases of reform with the restructure of Western Power on 31 March 2006.This section of the website contains the answers to some of the key questions about electricity reform.
